Innocent individuals sold for $400 in horrific Libya slave trade

It has been reported that hundreds of innocent individuals are being auctioned in a modern day slave trade in Libya. People are being sold for prices between $200 and $600.

Migrants and refugees in Libya, who are attempting to flee war and poverty back home, are being faced with much more danger as they are being abused and auctioned off as slaves. Reports state that hundreds of people are being sold for less than $400.

Although, to even speak about the price doesn’t feel right as human life is priceless. People cannot and should not be bought. Not only is slavery abolished and illegal but is completely inhumane. Something must be done to stop this immediately. How has this been allowed?

Libya is the main transit hub for refugees and migrants attempting to reach southern Europe by sea. They are coming from a number of countries including: Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Eritrea, Sudan, Guinea, Gambia, Senegal and Somalia.

After the fall of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, human trafficking has disgustingly become a booming trade. The European Union’s strategy to stop migrants and refugees travelling across the Mediterranean has led to more people being stuck in the north African country without money or food.

Libya’s UN-backed authorities said Tuesday that flights repatriating stranded migrants will be stepped up, as the International Organization for Migration called on Tripoli to empty its detention centres.

In a joint operation involving the internationally recognised authorities and UN migration agency, the IOM, 140 Nigerian migrants were jetted out of Libya on Tuesday in the latest in a string of flights carrying migrants out of the country.

At the Tarik al-Sikka detention centre in downtown Tripoli the migrants received their temporary travel documents, clothing and food before being bussed to the airport.

As social media got wind of the horrific news, the world is not happy. Petitions are flooding the internet, as are cries for help. They must not be ignored and we must not be silent.

Sign all petitions you see, stay updated with information and get involved in anything to support those who are tragically being dehumanised in Libya – as well as their loved ones.

Prayers go out to everyone affected. May we find a solution as soon as possible.

Updates to follow.
